Zootropolis (2016)

“We may be evolved, but deep down we’re still animals.”

What’s it about?

Zootropolis (translated as Zootopia outside the UK) teams up the first ever rabbit police officer with a sly fox to crack the case of 14 missing mammals.

Who’s in it?

Voices of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, J.K. Simmons and Nate Torrence apparently. Not Josh Gad.

Why should I watch it?

+ Cute animal kids in the opening scene
+ Extremely likeable characters who complimented each other
+ Juddy Hopps is an optimist with a can-do attitude and a knack for helping others
+ Nick Wilde is a slick con man with a backstory that can win anyone over
+ Sloth DMV scene was hi… la… rious
+ Relatable problems moving to a big city
+ Interesting and clever world built around a simple premise
+ Thought it was going one way, then goes another
+ Every cop should invest in a voice recorder pen, they look handy
+ Animal jokes and puns make for a whale of a time
+ Frozen, The Godfather and Breaking Baaaaad references
+ Has an important and relevant message about prejudice/stereotypes
+ Also touches on the issues of bullying and sexism

Why shouldn’t I watch it?

– If some of your most recent tweets end with #StopIslam
– If Donald Trump comes to mind when you think of the next President of America
– Scratch that, you should also go see it
– You might learn a little something

Anything else?

Highlights how fear brings about racism (especially on posts of Facebook friends you barely know, anyone else had those?) and how fear is used as a power to manipulate and control us. I know it’s easier to label bad people into certain groups but we have to remember that every group has bad AND good people.

Gotta give it up for Disney for making a creative film with an important issue made bite-sized for kids but still manages to be thought-provoking for adults.

9/10

  3. Mainly I’m glad you’ve admitted the difference between Zootopia and Zootropolis for me; I live in the UK and while I haven’t seen the film yet when I’ve mentioned it to people and called it Zootopia I’ve been looked at as if I’m a crazy person. Obviously I’ve been reading a lot of ‘out of the U.K.’ Reviews of the film, and the studios have decided to change the title for UK audiences (akin to assuming the Americans wouldn’t know what a Philosopher was). Thank you for proving to me I ain’t crazy, which summed up the majority of the looks I got from people when I mentioned I film called Zootopia.
Also great review, can’t wait to see the film.
