Annihilation (2018)

“It’s not destroying, it’s making something new.”

What’s it about?

A biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature don’t apply.

Who’s in it?

Natalie Portman, Daisy Domergue, Jane the Virgin, and Valkyrie.

Why should I watch it?

+ Imagine if Ex Machina, Arrival, and Alien had a baby.
+ Girl Power
+ They’re not just pretty faces either as they are all strong, independent women
+ There’s literally two men in the whole movie and one of them is unconscious most of the time
+ No white people either
+ Natalie Portman gives an Amy Adams-esque performance while she and the rest of her team are put through the ringer
+ Gina Rodriguez gives a memorable performance
+ It could mean something different for everyone will surely lead to plenty of discussion for a long time to come
+ The Shimmer was as beautiful and imaginative as it was scary and unpredictable
+ You’ll definitely want to look at these flowers
+ You’ll definitely want to crank the sound all the way up and find the biggest screen possible
+ The story covered such issues as life and death and self-destruction but it’ll mean different things to different people
+ Whatever you may think about it, you’re probably still right
+ It’ll force you to think as it consistently challenges you as a viewer since it doesn’t give you all the answers
+ The ending is one of the most beautiful sequences in a sci-fi film and will surely be talked about for a long time
+ It will force you to reconsider what you just watched

Why shouldn’t I watch it?

– It may not move quick enough for some people
– If you don’t get it early on, then you’ll probably hate it
– It’ll force you to think as it consistently challenges you as a viewer
– It’s open-ended nature means that you may not get the answers you’re looking for
– It’s Portman’s show so the supporting characters aren’t as developed

Anything else?

This was an amazing and beautiful sci-fi thriller with a strong, compelling narrative unlike many films out there. It will challenge and force viewers to think which doesn’t happen nearly enough anymore. It’s definitely ambitious so some may not get it but that’s what makes it so great as it is open to interpretation so there isn’t necessarily a wrong answer.
