Hey guys! This is missanchon, drifting over from the land of The Idiot Box to give you a guest review for LazySundayMovies!
“Why in pluperfect hell would you pee on a corpse?”
What’s it about?
An accidental audition, a Hollywood party and a murder bring together a bad petty thief, an even worse actress, and a private detective to solve the mystery of the murder,. ‘Coz you know, it’s a murder mystery, and that’s what happens in these movies….
Who’s in it?
Ironman, The Saint, and Michelle Monaghan, you know, that chick from True Detective.
Why should I watch it?
+ This is the role that brought Robert Downey Jr back on the map after that drug mess
+ Has a hilarious narrator that constantly gives away the plot whilst also bitching about other films using narration and other devices to give things away
+ Awesome looking title sequence that is a homage to films starring James Bond
+ Classic example of film noir and harks back to old school mystery stories, like The Big Sleep or anything by Raymond Chandler
+ Written by Shane Black, the guy who gave us awesome films such as Lethal Weapon and Iron Man 3, and like the majority of his films, this is set during christmas, so it can double as a christmas movie, like Die Hard…and Lethal Weapon
+ Val Kilmer’s role as ‘Gay’ Perry is considered to be the first openly gay lead character in an action film
+ Val Kilmer’s best role in the last ten years
+ An awesome torture scene that has a funny backstory. (Apparently Robert Downey Jr’s screams didn’t seem authentic enough, so his wife sat behind him pulling and pinching his back to get the right reactions)
+ A hell of a lot of great and memorable dialogue that is incredibly fun to quote when at a party or surrounded by idiots
+ There is a game of Russian Roulette with unexpected results
Why Shouldn’t I Watch it?
– Gay Perry’s sweatpants
– You may have to watch it a second or third time to catch some things that are easily missed
Although the plot itself is predictable for a mystery, much of what happens in between is completely unexpected, odd, and funny which gives the entire film an overwhelming sense of the surreal. It is easy to want to watch it again and again, because the film has everything you need in it; a mystery, action, humour, hints of romance, and zany dialogue. You really cannot go wrong with this movie. It’s a great movie that should be on everyone’s must see list.
