The Nice Guys (2016)

“Dad, there’s like whores here and stuff.”

What’s it about?

After a pornstar dies in a flashy manner, a guy who beats up people for money teams up with a drunk private investigator to crack the world’s most interesting case of a missing Amelia, not last named Earheart.

Who’s in it?

Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe, a wonderful young actress called Angourie Rice, Kim Basinger, Matt Bomer, Margaret Qualley and the kid from Iron Man 3.

Why should I watch it?

+ Great opening scene and introduction to the two main lead
+ Ryan Gosling was the funniest part of the movie, hands down
+ We had a little taste of his comedy  in Crazy, Stupid, Love but he took it to a whole new level
+ Bit like Channing Tat-yum in 21 Jump Street
+ Whether he’s getting hurt/in trouble or making really sarky comments
+ Russell Crowe is in his element when he’s hurting people but he’s also got a few hilarious zingers about marriage
+ The chemistry and interaction between the two was so entertaining to watch
+ Calling this movie The Funny Guys would’ve been more accurate
+ It genuinely cracked me up a lot of times (and frequently too), especially throwing the body, trying to break a door open and a Family Guy type of a cutaway
+ Loved the dark humour in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and I’m glad to see that it carried on in this one
+ It’s also cleverly written, making it smarter than your standard buddy cop films like Ride Along or that Adam Sandler Netflix film that I’ll never watch
+ And shows you how to do slapstick comedy, not just having Melissa McCarthy or Rebel Wilson fall over
+ Daughter was surprisingly hilarious, has great exchange with Gosling and Crowe
+ Think people always find it funny to watch mature kids e.g. Hit-Girl from Kick-Ass
+ In addition, she was helpful in situations and make (some) smart moves
+ Action is pretty good, bloody and violent enough for me but with a lot more civilian casualties than I expected
+ Looks and feels like 70s LA, awesome music too
+ Ha, they should really have that smog protest in China
+ Oh, and there’s stripper mermaids

Why shouldn’t I watch it?

– Turning lights on as a distraction, really?
– Sorry Gosling, but if you have problems smelling shit and your wife tells you she smells gas, you fucking take her word for it
– If you think porn is bad for you
– Misthrowing a gun at someone is so overplayed man
– Don’t have to be a detective to guess the ending of the movie
– When they finally find Amelia, you’re gonna wish they didn’t
– She just comes across as fucking annoying and makes a lot of dumb moves

Anything else?

Really looking forward to this one and I’m happy to say that it did not disappoint. I loved it! I really hope this makes enough money so that, unlike Oscar Pistorius’ defence, it has a leg to stand on. Someone give me The Nice Guys 2. Also, there’s quite a sad realisation at the end but hey, you’ll have a fucking fun journey getting there.

8/10

  1. Never thought about watching this one but you convinced me! And Ryan Gosling was spectacular in The Notebook so I believe he can do anything. 😂

  2. I saw the poster when I went to the cinema the other night but thought it was more of a serious action movie. But if you tell me it’s Ryan Gosling in a comedy? Totally gonna go check it out 😉

  3. I saw this in theaters and I was so glad I did. Couldn’t convince my SO to see it but he missed out. It was hilarious and real in all the right moments! The daughter though, she was probably the smartest of the gang. Crowe and Gosling have great timing!

    1. Huh, thought guys would be more into this. Why didn’t he want to go? Soooo funny! Funnier than most comedies. I really liked her character, so much fun watching her interact with the adults aha

      1. I’m not sure. He’s usually into buddy cop type movies — I would have thought this humor was perfect for him. I think I’ll purchase it when it’s out and ask him to watch it with me. I bet he’ll get a few chuckles.
