Eddie the Eagle (2016)

“Frankly, Eddie, you will never be Olympic material.”

What’s it about?

Based on the life of Eddie Edwards, a guy who chose the Olympic life but the Olympic life didn’t choose him, and his underdog story during the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.

Who’s in it?

The guy from Kingsman: The Secret Service, Wolverine and Christopher Walken.

Why should I watch it?

+  We get a different looking Taren Egerton, who is more nerdy and clumsy but extremely likeable
+ Serously, it’s incredibly hard not to root for this guy
+ A determined guy who keeps getting back up even after getting rejected like a fake ID
+ Doesn’t take no for an answer like Dennis from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
+ But, you know, the good kind
+ He’s also has childish mannerism for a 22 year old, but it makes him more endearing I think
+ Egerton and Jackman meshed together well, their relationship makes a fun watch
+ Plus, you get to see Jackman’s release face
+ Film won’t make you burst out laughing but you’ll smile and do a fist pump throughout
+ Does a great job setting up who to like and who to hate
+ Holy shit, ski jumping looks fucking dangerous
+ Massive respect to these guys
+ Also, it features one of the coolest and sweetest mum ever
+ Are those references to Cool Runnings and Billy Elliot?
+ Hearing You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall & Oates always makes me happy, subtle song choice by the way
+ Even the score just makes you gonna go out there and be somebody
+ This take on winter sports will warm your heart

Why shouldn’t I watch it?

– Let’s be honest though, Winter Olympics is like the third Hemsworth brother of sporting events
– There’s a third Hemsworth bro?
– Exactly
– And the event is basically who can fall the furthest?
– This would translate as a guy running down a ramp and seeing how far he lands as a Summer Olympic event
– Took a lot of liberties with the true story
– One crash had shitty CGI
– Apparently drunk mentors make the best mentors

Anything else?

It truly is an inspiring story about a regular guy who defied the odds and achieved his dream, when he’s been told no his entire life by mostly everyone. On the flip side, he probably wouldn’t have gotten that far if he didn’t have any haters, right? If you have important shit to do and you’re feeling like you can’t be arsed, whack this movie on.

7/10

  1. Wait…release face? Do you mean….
    No.
Seems the movie’s pretty neat and chessy. I like cheesy, so I’ll check it out.
    And no, again.
There. Is. No. Third. Hemsworth. Brother.
I refuse to believe it. Gosh no. Poor guy.

  3. I actually just saw this the other night and plan on writing my own review this week, so it’s fun that I decided to look at your reviews from the last few weeks today and saw this one.

I loved this movie. Yeah it’s nothing spectacular, but it’s just so heartwarming and adorable. And it’s fun to see a very comedic, ‘goofy’ character for Taron Edgerton. I’ve somehow managed to see literally every film or television thing he’s been in (no idea how, I didn’t set out to, I just realized this the other day actually) and he has a bit of humor under his belt, but nothing goofy like this one. The kid’s a really great actor in serious things so the real test is if an amazing straight actor can be silly and it work, and it really did in this one.

I do disagree on Winter Olympics being the Third Hemsworth, though. Summer Olympics has basically four sports I’m interested in at all, but I love the Winter Olympics almost all around! (Just can’t get into Curling, lol) Ski jumping is a crazy sport! The entire sport is basically “who can come the closest to dying but not die?!?”

    Anyways, great review!

    1. I’ll keep an eye out for your views! Even the music was goofy, got an 80s vibe. Yeah he was awesome! Nailed his facial expressions as well. Look forward to his future man.
Aha I agree, it does look like a crazy sport. Probably the closes thing you’ll get to flying aha
      Thanks for reading!

  4. I saw this movie the other night and I thought it was well done. I wouldn’t have known Taron had played a superagent in another movie if I hadn’t seen it. Hugh Jackman was good. I completely forgot to look for the third Hemsworth bro’. Is he the Norwegian coach?
