Captain America: Civil War (2016)

“We try to save as many people as we can, sometimes that doesn’t mean everybody.”

What’s it about?

After trash talking in The Avengers and play-fighting in Age of Ultron, Captain America and Iron Man go to all out war with each other after a mission leaves damages and dead civilians, forcing the kids to decide which parent they want to side with.

Who’s in it?

Okay, there’s *inhales* Chris Evans, Robert Downy Jr., Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Chadwick Bosman, and Tom Holland. *exhales*

Why should I watch it?

+ First of all, the movie isn’t a Civil Disagreement or Civil Debate, it really is a WAR
+ High stakes with very real consequences
+ Interesting evolution/continuation how Stark went from anti to pro government because of Ultron and how Cap went from pro to anti because Hydra seems to be behind everything
+ More serious tone, similar to CA: The Winter Soldier
+ Great ideological conflict, you can totally understand where both sides are coming from
+ Went in #TeamIronMan but eventually sided with Cap (it’s like his movie or something)
+ Chase scene with Bucky, Panther and Cap
+ Cap trying to contain Bucky reminded me of Hulk and Iron Man in Age of Ultron
+ THE AIRPORT BATTLE SCENE
+ Believe the hype guys, the best action sequences from the MCU
+ Funny banter between Bucky and Falcon
+ Sam Wilson has never looked more like Falcon in this movie
+ Most of the comedic elements come from Ant-Man and Spider-Man
+ Ant-Man will surprise a lot of people
+ Tom Holland is probably the best Spider-Man/Peter Parker combo
+ Tapped more into his scientific, geeky side and has a Deadpool kind of meta about him
+ Aunt May looks a lot younger and hotter, what cream has she been using?
+ Black Panther is badass, great introduction and fits well into the story
+ Good twist near the end
+ Incredibly emotional fight scene
+ I mean, wow, powerful stuff
+ Just makes you wanna shout “Martha” to stop them fighting
+ Addresses missing Avengers and how the world got more villains popping up after Iron Man
+ It might not be an Avengers movie but there’s plenty of literal avenging going on
+ Clocked a few comic book references
+ Dean Pelton from Community cameo
+ Subtle set up the Spider-Man and Black Panther solo movies
+ Funny Stan Lee Cameo

Why shouldn’t I watch it?

– A bit slow to start, lot of things to set up
– Another throwaway villain, Marvel’s best villains (except for Loki) can only found on Netflix
– But hey, at least they’re consistent? 🌚
– Also, hold up guys, can someone explain…
– Does Winter Soldier have super powers?
– Really thought it was just the metallic arm

Anything else?

Shout out to the Russo bros, looks like we are in safe hands for Avengers: Infinity War.
I’m not sure if it beat The Avengers for my number one Marvel movie trophy but I do know it’s a whole lot better than some other super hero movie, which had to juggle less characters and had tons of material to use but still managed to ruin the story, that I won’t mention 🌚 Do yourself a favour, drop whatever you’re doing and go watch this right now! And oh, don’t be discouraged by people leaving and hold out for 2 end-credit scenes.

  1. Bucky has something of the same stuff in him which Cap got…I guess not quite as strong, but enough to survive a fall which would kill a normal human. He might be a little bit weaker than Cap (not much though) but he is also a trained fighter.

      1. I’ve always thought Bucky was a little stronger than Cap. And at the end I totally thought he was going to go in the Cradle and get his arm back.

  2. I saw this one yesterday and I absolutely loved it!! I was also #temaIronMan but my feelings went to them both. In the end I just can’t choose because it is two amazing superheroes!! The movie was awesome, love Spider-Man!

      1. Sames, Apocalypse is like a starter before Thanos finally gets out of his damn chair. Lawrence looks like she has a Katniss vibe about her from the trailer.

      2. Haha so many that like him, I don’t really get it… 😀 Perhaps, have not really thought about it but I am glad she has a bigger role than in the previous movies.

      3. Aha okay, good point. I will counter with… He does like taking people’s lives, but he’s also giving us 2 more Avenger films? That kinda evens out? Aha

  3. I cannot wait to see this movie. It feels like the Marvel Universe is winding down, like we’re hitting the climax of their filmmaking going to get big films (like Infinity Wars) and then it’ll fizz away so I’m enjoying them while I can.

    1. Yeah I really don’t know where they will go after Infin Wars. I mean, where do you go from saving the whole universe? You’ll love this one though!

  4. Ant-Man definitely surprised me! I also am glad I wasn’t the only one excited by Dean Pelton’s appearance – I was so pleased! I literally feel like he’s exactly the same character 😉 Great Review!

    1. “This is your conscience. We haven’t spoken in a while.” Soo funny aha! Love the little community references, wonder who they’ll bring next. Thanks! Appreciate it.

  5. Didn’t realise the film had more than just a cameo from Spiderman! I probably won’t go and see it in cinema but this post has got me actually wanting to watch it (words I never thought I’d say)

  6. You make a good point- they really didn’t develop the villain enough. He felt almost like an after-thought. I really hope they do more with him in the future- I mean, come on, he’s still around and he’s cocky.

  7. I was so excited for this movie but was afraid of being let down. Thank god it ended up being incredible! Great way to continue Captain America’s story!

  8. I didn’t get the love for this film that other people got. I get that it filled more backstory but it just seemed cramp and too convoluted. And how The Winter Soldier and Iron Man tie in together too? Hmm! I did like the casting of Spider-Man though.

    1. Thought it was done really well, all things considered. Yeah me too! Can’t wait for his solo film. Aunt May? More like Aunt May I?
