Blue Valentine (2010)

“How do you trust your feelings when they can just disappear like that?”

What’s it about?

We drop in on the lives of a couple married for 5 years. They seem to be a happy family but as we spend more time with them, we see resentment, anger and frustration start a journey to a path that they may not come back from.

Who’s in it?

Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

Why should I watch it?

+ Brilliant performances from Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams
+ Feelings and interaction between them feels real and natural
+ Which makes the movie even more heartbreaking
+ Interesting methods of how the director got genuine reactions and dialogue (thanks IMDb)
+ Complete opposite of a standard rom-com
+ Ryan Gosling still manages to pull off a balding haircut
+ If you’re single on Valentine’s Day

Why shouldn’t I watch it?

– It’s pretty depressing
– If you’re having doubts about your relationship
– If you’re on a first date

Anything else?

Reminded me of (500) Days of Summer but less comedic and a lot more darker. Like it’s brother that spent 25 years in prison. It’s a scary thought how things you find endearing and charming about each other becomes the very things you can’t stand about them. A warning that love can give you everything, and leave you with nothing.

8/10
