Whiplash (2014)

“Not my fucking tempo!”

What’s it about?

Andrew Neiman is an ambitious student at a top music school where he draws the attention of a jazz instructor, Terence Fletcher. Fletcher channels his inner Joe Jackson in order to make Neiman the best jazz drummer.

Who’s in it?

Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons.

Why should I watch it?

+ Awesome performance from J. K. Simmons
+ Miles Teller can do drama as well as comedy
+ He also does the actual drumming (real recognise real)
+ Intensely harsh but very funny insults
+ Psychological battle of wits
+ Great music
+ Great ending

Why shouldn’t I watch it?

– If you’ve seen this movie before it was cool
– Might open up old wounds about a mean teacher or boss you had

Anything else?

Brings up questions like: Would Michael Jackson have been that good if his Dad didn’t push him (literally and figuratively)? And if so, is the music he has given us worth the amount of beatings and abuse that he suffered?
